CPA Allen Alternative. October can still change the year.
A choice made while the year is open still has to live next to the 20th.
Ask about October.
The year is still open, the 20th is not flexible
October is when owners in Allen start to feel the year as a thing they might still steer. A bonus, a truck, a retirement contribution, a conversation about an S corporation election. Those choices can change the return if they are made before the year closes and if the cash can carry them. The city sales tax return does not wait to see what you decide. It is due on the 20th for September's sales, and it will be due again in November for October's sales. We hold both thoughts in the same week without letting one erase the other.
The local names stay on those filings. September's taxable sales still split into the state 6.25 percent and the city 2 percent, and the city piece still has the half percent 4A, the half percent 4B, and the 1 percent general fund under local code 2043072. A planning meeting that blends all of that into one tax expense has already lost the thread. Planning sits on top of a closed month. It does not replace one.
What a useful October conversation includes
We look at profit through the last closed month, the estimates already paid, and the cash that is actually free. A retirement plan is a lever when profit is high and no plan exists. It is a bad idea when the plan would be funded by a line of credit you are already tired of. An equipment purchase is a lever when you needed the asset anyway. It is noise when the only reason to buy it is a rumor about tax. We will name the lever we think is actually on the table. You decide.
An S corporation election is a threshold with a date, not a personality type. If the wages, the profit, and the calendar line up, we will walk through what would have to be true. If they do not, we will say so and go back to the 20th. Electing a tax status on top of unnamed local tax and an unreconciled summer is how people get a sophisticated return and a basic mess.
The close still happens
October's bank, cards, and loans still have to tie. A planning season is when plugs multiply, because everyone is moving fast and coding things to a bucket called year end. We slow that bucket down. Each large check gets a name. A deposit from a fall event gets the same treatment as a Tuesday. Fall Fest can fill a weekend and still be a list of tenders, not a feeling. We like the weekend. We post the tenders.
Estimates that are due in this part of the year should follow those closed months. If we are missing July or August, the estimate is a story and we will label it as a story. A labeled story is allowed on a call. It is not allowed inside a payment you cannot explain to yourself in January.
What we will hand you
You should leave an October call with three lists. What must be filed on the coming 20ths. What could still change the year, with a dollar size written in words. What has to be true in the books before a return starts. If a list is empty, we say empty. The call does not grow a fake project so the hour looks full. The practice earns the next month by being useful in this one.
A fall weekend in Allen can fill the event center and the hotel lots at the same time. We enjoy that the town has a season. The working papers for October still show the sales tax filing, the cash, and the choice you did or did not make. A season is not a reason to blend those three into one note.
