CPA Allen Alternative. The return waits on honest names.

We prepare the return after the months are closed and the local pieces are named.

Ask about the return.

A return is a reading, not a rescue

Owners call in March because a deadline has become a sound in the room. We understand the sound. We still start by asking whether January is closed. A return prepared on open months is a draft with a signature too close to it. For an owner in Allen, open months usually hide the same three problems. Sales tax parked inside income. A payroll provider that never quite met the bank. A property bill or a franchise estimate coded to whatever account was handy. Naming those is the work that makes a return possible.

The local pieces are part of that naming. If the sales tax return has been filing a combined 8.25 percent without a ledger that can show the state 6.25 and the city 2, the income on the return is suspect in the same places. We do not need the customer receipt to say 4A on it. We need your books to be able to. The 20th filings and the income tax return are different forms that should share one set of sales.

What has to be in the file

Working papers for each closed month. A reconciliation that a second person can follow. The sales tax filings. Hotel filings if you have rooms. Payroll reports from your provider, not a recollection of what payday felt like. Asset lists if 15 April renditions are part of your year. Franchise computations if a report is due 15 May. We would rather delay a return by a week than file without one of those and call the gap immaterial. Immaterial is a word people use when they have not looked.

Estimates paid during the year belong in that file too. They are not a substitute for the return, and the return is not allowed to ignore them. If an estimate was a guess because the summer was unreconciled, we say that in the workpapers. The balance due or the refund then has a story you can repeat without our help.

Relief, when it is real

If a prior year was late, penalty relief is a request you make with a return in hand, not a mood you express instead of filing. We will talk about whether the facts support a request. We will not promise that a letter will be forgiven because the business is likable. Likable is common. Complete is less common. Complete is what we can actually help you be.

Entity cleanup belongs before the return when the cleanup changes who the taxpayer is. A disregarded company, a partnership, and a corporation can wear one logo and still file on different forms. If an election is still available and still wise, October was the better month, but we will tell you what is left. We will not elect something on the way to the mailbox because the form looked shorter.

Your part and ours

You sign the return. You keep the records. You make the decisions about what the business did. We prepare the return from the closed year and we tell you when a line does not tie. A letter of engagement names the fee and the scope before that work starts. A short call is not that letter. If the year is too far behind for the deadline you have in mind, we will say so. A no is a complete service.

Bring the sales tax filings for the year, not a summary from memory. The names inside the city 2 percent should already be visible there. If they are not, the return waits one more close, and we would rather spend that close in Allen's own figures than in a generic checklist.

Say which year, and whether the months are closed.

You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice.

We close the month, set up payroll, prepare the statements, and prepare the return. An audit, a review, or a compilation is signed by a firm that is allowed to put that cover on.
